About The Care Between

We believe the hardest moments in life deserve the most care. The Care Between is a Massachusetts nonprofit that designs and delivers dignity-centered care kits for people in transition.

Why we exist

The Care Between began with a simple observation: the smallest details are the first to slip through the cracks — and the last to be remembered.

Our work is shaped by years on the front lines of care — in prisons, nursing homes, and needle exchanges, where loss is frequent and dignity is too often treated as a luxury. It is shaped, too, by lived experience of severe, life-limiting illness, and by the moments when the system around you forgets that you are a person first.

We have seen what gets missed. A person released from incarceration walks into their first night of freedom without the basics — soap, a toothbrush, a sense that anyone sees them — facing fragmented services and stigma before they can even begin. A patient in a shared hospital room lies awake through a long night because a roommate is coughing, or crying, or simply breathing loudly, and a single pair of earbuds would have meant rest — and rest means healing.

These are not small things. They are the difference between surviving a transition and being held through one. So we build care kits — thoughtfully, specifically, with the people who will receive them in mind — to meet foundational needs and protect mental health, so people can reach the services waiting for them.

The little bits matter. We exist to make sure they don't get missed.

A note on what we are — and aren’t

501(c)(3) status: in progress

A note on our status: The Care Between is a registered Massachusetts nonprofit. Federal 501(c)(3) status is in progress — until then, every dollar goes straight to building and delivering care kits.
